Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering (NIBE), affiliated to International Federation for Medical & Biological Engineering, was founded in 1999 as independent, non-profit-making and professional national organisation of a trustee status.NIBE's origins rest on the realisation that the pioneering activities of advancing biomedical science, health and human well-being in Nigeria with the application of modern technology required not only individual disciplinary contributions, but multi- as well as inter-disciplinary cooperation between men and women from the broad disciplines of the biological, medical, physical, engineering, environmental and management/social sciences.

From its inception up until now, NIBE has striven to fulfuil its responsibility to the society. This is by way of educating the public in developments in the field of biomedical engineering and sciences and their implications for health and human well-being; emphasizing the multi-disciplinary features of biomedical engineering; and creating awareness on the role and responsibilities of biomedical engineering personnel in the changing world.

In conjuction with the Universities, Polytechnics and other educational/research institutions, NIBE has continued to live up to its role in the continuing education of its members both in developments in their own fields and for changes in their fields of interest, or for widest responsibilities. These it has achieved through its various meetings, conferences, journals, other periodicals,and professional courses.
